PlayWSOP is the official poker game of the World Series of Poker, the world’s most trusted poker brand. This free poker app lets you play Texas Hold’em and Omaha cash games and tournaments against friends, family and other poker players from around the world.

The WSOP does not allow anyone to use their name, Playtika is not just any game developer. Playtika has extensive experience in developing state-of-the-art applications that are realistic, yet easy to use and fun. The combination of WSOP and Playtika is poker heaven.

Desktop software

At the time of this review, you must have Windows 7 (or later) or Mac OS 10.6.8 to run the desktop client. You also need at least 250 MB of free hardware space on your Mac or PC.

The first thing you need to do is download the installation package and then install the software. The whole process takes about 15 minutes.

The mobile version of WSOP can be found via the “Online Poker” link in the main menu. This link will take you to download the WSOP NJ app from the website (Android) or the App Store (iOS), depending on your device.

As of this writing, players need at least Android 2.3 or iOS 6.1 to download and run the app.

Play request

After you secure a download-based client or application, you have the option to sign up for an account. The registration process is self-explanatory and can be completed within minutes.

You will be asked to enter various details such as your name, email address, home address, date of birth and home state. After filling out the form, you will need to verify your account via a link that will be sent to your email address. You can join WSOP NJ from anywhere in the United States. However, you cannot legally play for real money unless you are within the state of New Jersey.

WSOP uses geolocation to determine your location. The technology uses your computer or smartphone’s Wi-Fi signal to determine if you are within a state boundary. You don’t need to be connected to the internet via WiFi for geolocation technology to find you. However, you must be able to see other Wi-Fi networks from your device.

WSOP Poker

While Caesars Casino has the online gaming licenses required to operate legally in the United States, WSOP provides the brand and 888 provides the software platform that makes this possible.

Backed by the World Series of Poker, WSOP.com offers certain advantages that other poker sites don’t. For example, the WSOP regularly hosts online qualifiers for live events at the annual World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. Win one of these online qualifiers and join the best poker tournament at the next WSOP.

WSOP traffic is average, but is growing due to the aggressive expansion and surge of interstate online poker in the US. WSOP poker got a significant boost in 2018 when New Jersey, Delaware, and Nevada signed the Multistate Internet Gaming Agreement (MSIGA), allowing poker sites operating in the three states to share player pools.

Michigan later joined MSIGA, potentially adding another major state to the WSOP’s combined player pool. However, WSOP Poker uses new and improved software in Michigan, but not in New Jersey, Delaware or Nevada. Therefore, the WSOP had to update its software in the last three states before it could add Michigan to its syndicated player network.

888 software also supports Delaware regulated poker sites. You won’t see the WSOP name on Delaware poker sites, but they are based on the same software and now share players with the WSOP in New Jersey and Nevada.

WSOP Poker Downloads

You can go to WSOP.com to download poker software for PC, Mac, iOS and Android devices. When you’re on your desktop, the WSOP website recognizes whether you’re accessing from a PC or Mac and automatically offers you the correct software download for your system. Mobile gamers can visit the App Store to download apps for iPhone, iPad, or virtually any Android device.

The WSOP software platform is developed by 888, one of the largest online poker providers in the world. As you’d expect, they bring a professional feel with a clean, fast and easy-to-use poker interface.

After downloading and installing the WSOP software, you can run it to log into your account, make deposits and play for real money. If you’re new to the game, the standard table view shows you the starter table, while the express seating option allows you to choose the game type and stake before the table is automatically selected.

Personally, I don’t think the express seating option is very valuable as it removes the ability to choose the exact table you want. It’s best to visit the “All Games” tab in the software to see a full list of tables showing the number of players at each table, average pot size, and other statistics showing how active players are. This view is best because it makes it easier to select the table that looks like it will provide the most operations.

The software interface is pretty basic, but that only makes the software easier to use. I can easily navigate between different cash games and tournaments, select tables and manage software settings.

Money game

The WSOP offers a variety of standard poker cash games and tournaments, as well as several unusual formats. As is the case with all US poker sites these days, the vast majority of action here is Texas Hold’em. The WSOP also offers other game types including Omaha, Omaha Hi/Lo, Stud and Stud Hi/Lo, but traffic is a gamble for these other game types.

When it comes to Texas Hold’em, WSOP.com offers no-limit cash games, fixed-limit cash games, multi-table tournaments, and play-and-play tournaments (SNG). With healthy player traffic, almost all Texas Hold’em formats have medium to high traffic levels.

No-Limit Hold’em cash games are by far the most popular cash game format at the WSOP. Cash game stakes range from as low as $0.01/$0.02 (with a $2 buy-in) to $100/$200 (with a $20,000 buy-in). Fixed limit amounts range from $0.05/$0.10 to $100/$200, but these games don’t run very often due to lack of interest.

Pot Limit Omaha up to $25/$50 and Limit Stud up to $10/$20 in Omaha and Stud cash games – if you can find someone willing to sit. Right now, Texas Hold’em is your best bet, followed by Omaha.

Online tournament

As you’d expect from a poker site named after the World Series of Poker, WSOP  invests heavily in its tournament offerings. This is still a growing poker site operating in a limited US market, but the tournament scene here is above average in terms of value, number of players and the types of tournaments offered.

A quick glance at the Promotions tab on the WSOP website will confirm that tournaments play a significant role on this poker site. The biggest regular tournament right now is the $100,000 weekly guaranteed Sunday game, but that’s not as big as it might seem. WSOP also hosts annual true online events that are considered part of the World Series of Poker.

Recently, WSOP hosted four World Series events online, with prize pools ranging from $500,000 to $1,000,000. Million dollar prize pools don’t come out every week on WSOP.com, but it’s still nice to see the big online tournaments finally making their way back to the US.

In addition to the big tournaments, WSOP hosts a series of smaller online events each day, with buy-ins ranging from free to $500. There are hundreds of thousands of dollars in guaranteed prize pools on Sunday. Dozens of games are held every week in various formats. The  hosts normal freezeout tournaments as well as rebuys, deep stacks, short decks, all-in tournaments, knockouts, turbos, super turbos and even team events.

Some older reviews found online only mention the tournament scene here as “ok” or “decent”, but the poker site seems to have expanded since then. With multiple states now sharing tables at the WSOP, it’s becoming easier for sites to support large tournaments.

Still missing are tournaments in other types of games. You will occasionally find Pot Limit Omaha tournaments, but these are rare. Omaha Hi/Lo and Stud tournaments are even more rare.
